Close to the boardwalk, the moat widens into a pool, which is fed by a small cascading stream. Rocks, a fallen log, and sway poles give the orang-utans the means to cross the stream and also to access it. Both the pool and the moat are only 45cm (18”) deep minimizing potential for orang-utans to drown. The moat will over time grow in with plants creating a marsh. It will discourage the orang-utans, who do not like to get wet, from hunkering down in this location where they would be hard to view.
